Make a Pit Stop in Historic Paia Town
Once you arrive on Maui’s North Shore, you can find a free parking lot on the mauka (mountain) side of the road– right after the parking lot for Paia Bay Beach Park.
If that lot is full, you can look for street parking, or pay for parking in the lot behind Charley’s Restaurant and Saloon.
If you want to set your self up best for sunset, grab some snacks and refreshing beverages at the Minit Stop Gas Station, Paia Pit Stop, or Mana Foods.
If you have time to visit Paia’s many boutiques and art galleries, we have lots of great suggestions.
Simmer Style on Hana Highway is a great surfy boutique for mens and women’s clothing, plus they have lots of locally made items like Maui-made jewelry, beach accessories, Dakine luggage and more.
Shopping for art and gifts in Paia is super fun, and some of our favorite galleries and gift shops are Maui Hands, Alice in Hulaland, Original Kashmir, Mandala Creations, Luna & Tide, and the Aloha Bead Company.
Drive to Ho’okipa Beach Park for Sunset
Ho’okipa Beach Park is a definite must-see when visiting Maui’s North Shore.
Not only is it insanely gorgeous, but it is also one of the most world-renowned beaches in the world for water sports, surfing, windsurfing, and more.
People from across the globe travel to Maui to visit Ho’okipa’s shore – and sunset is certainly one of the best times to do it.
To find Ho’okipa, travel North East from Paia Town.

As you exit Paia’s limits, you’ll drive through an area called Ku’au.
You’ll see signage for Mama’s Fish House Restaurant at a curve, and you’re just a couple of minutes away.
At Ho’okipa, you can park at the top parking lot for an aerial perspective of the North Shore Maui sunset, or drive down into the beach park area.

This is a trendy beach for Maui families, and the North Shore Maui surf scene, so be sure to drive slowly and watch out for children and people crossing car pathways.
In the past few years, Ho’okipa has also become a popular destination for the Green Hawaiian Sea Turtles.

Many visitors flock to see the turtles at Ho’okipa, and that’s totally cool. Remember to keep your distance, and do not touch the turtles in any way.
